Why I love the Trout Lake Farmers Market

It was unseasonably warm and I was woefully overdressed the first time I visited the Trout Lake Farmers Market. Despite my discomfort, my enthusiasm was unbridled as I discovered a rich array of delicious, colourful, locally-grown produce that was practically at my doorstep.

Since then, attending the Trout Lake Market has been a weekend highlight for me. I get to meet the people who are growing my food, ask them questions and get advice on how to cook vegetables I’m not familiar with. I love the festive atmosphere and look forward to special events like the cookbook swap and pie-making contest. I feel very fortunate to be able to buy local food and support the farmers in my province.

The Trout Lake Community Centre is renovating this summer and its parking lot will be used for construction equipment, so the Vancouver Farmers Markets organizers are proposing a move to the north parking lot in John Hendry Park. This suggestion will be presented to the Park Board on April 9.

Please sign the petition in support of keeping the Trout Lake Farmers Market at Trout Lake. As you’ll see from the signatures and comments already, the market is a valuable part of the East Van community.
